Crocheted Felted Diaper Bag

My husband's exwife (my kids' biomom) is expecting another baby and in the name of being the 'bigger' person, I made a felted diaper bag as a gift. It turned out so well that I think I might make one for myself (it doesn't have to be a diaper bag). I was inspired by the knitted felted bags on Knit Kit Web Page, but designed this one myself. The picture shows my finished one in grey and blue, but have fun with the colours. Do one in one solid colour, or do something in rainbow stripes!

You can find the pattern here.

That is cute, and you are a better person for it. Have you given it to her yet?

Ok - this is way cool!

I love the size - looks like it'd be a good purse or project bag!

Gotta put this on my To-do list!

Thanks for sharing!

I love your pattern and I am working on this bag right now. I do have a question in regards to the construction and felting process. Did you felt your pieces first then put the bag together or did you put the bag together first then felted the project? Thank you for sharing your pattern with all. I can't wait to finish the one that I have started.

THIS BAG IS SOOOOOOO CUUUUUUUUUTE! I HAVE NEVER SEEN ANYONE MAKE A CROCHETED DIAPER BAG BEFORE! IT IS REALLY INEXPENSIVE & I CAN REALLY USE THIS BAG FOR MY TODDLER OR FOR MY OWN PERSONAL USE AS WELL! THANKS FOR THINKING OF US MOMS!

Just finished mine and looks great! I only used 2 skeins of yarn of each color, but I was using scraps for the end to put together. I did put together before felting which worked. I did not seperate the bottle pockets before felting for I thought that I may have room for only 2 bottles and that was the case. Also instead of putting both smaller pockets next to each other I put one on the inside. I like to have inside pockets and would have made more, but I did run out of yarn. Great pattern. Thanks.

My side and bottom piece is also tooo long. Should it be 138 rows?

It takes a "real" woman to give from her heart without doubting. This is such a great bag. Thanks for sharing.

It's been wonderful to read all the responses to this pattern. I've edited it as mistakes have been pointed out (i.e. construct before felting).
Also, an update...she never used the bag; she bought one in the same colours and put the felted one in a closet. My kids were angrier than I was. I explained that a gift is a gift; you have no control over it once its out of your hands. And I made it more for the sake of the kids anyway.

I'm so glad I found this pattern. A good friend has just found out that she is pregnant, and I was wanting to find just the right diaper bag to make for her. This is perfect! I've already started it, and I can't wait to see how it turns out!

Thank you so much for sharing this pattern!

Monica,
Cute bag! I have grandbabies #8 and #9 due in June and September. Do you know if it's possible to "felt" any other types of yarn? I'd love to make a few bags myself, but I can't work with wool; I'm allergic to it.
Also, tell the kids they shouldn't be too upset about the bag being put in the closet. I've been crocheting for 40+ years (my grandma taught me when I was 3!!) and I've given a lot of gifts--some of which get "put up because it's too pretty to use" or "it's handmade and don't want it to get ruined." AND, even if it DID get put in the closet for other reasons, SOMEBODY will eventually get their hands on it and use it!! OH---IF ANYONE IS INTERESTED, I'M A TUPPERWARE CONSULTANT......THEY HAVE A TON OF GREAT SALES IN MAY!!

Carla,
You can use any natural animal based fibre; such as alpaca and llama. It's the naturally occurring lanolin oils that help to felt wool.

oh my gosh. this is soooo cute. I am totally going to make one! First for me, as a project bag. I may try to increase the size of the "bottle pockets slightly, and reduce to two for water bottles! I love the outside pockets! I hate rummaging inside a bag. I will add more flat-ish type pockets to the oppisite side for wipes, if used as a diaper bag for my niece, or pattern notes for a project bag, and maybe a cell phone outer pocket. Thanks! You are a genius. Oh did you ever work out the issue, mentioned by the other comments, about the side/bottom piece being too long? Or is it correct as patterned, or should the stitches just be worked in some how? Oy yeah/and also: I have had many a project poo-pooed. Then years later the person come back and BEG me for more, and their friends want one too. Besides, you have given more to the interweb with this gift than you will ever know.

Hi,
I hope you still read these comments. This diaper bag is PERFECT....just what I was looking for. My son and daughter in law are due in 6 weeks. I haven't crocheted for years and wanted to try a felting project. I do have a couple of questions about attaching the handle. Do you felt the handle first then attach it?

I tried sending you a message, but public access is not allowed on your profile.
I attached the handles afterwards. But if I were making the bag now, I would install grommets on the bag and attach the handles before felting. That way you could sew the handles up nice and tidy, instead of having a knot in them.
Does that help?

Monica,
I loved, loved, loved making this bag. My handles didn't turn out as nice as yours, but I did learn how to put in grommets. I'd like to send a picture but don't know how to download it to this site. Is there a way

great pattern but did you know that the adorable photo you have in the column on the left covers up part of the text making it hard to read without copy & pasting to a doc.
